Thick Dachshund paws padded upon the well used sidewalk of the downtown area. Her tongue lolled out the side of her mouth as she trotted along, before she slipped away into an alley for the shade was much needed on this hot day. Gretel was a loner. She belonged to no pack, no owners, and thus she wandered single-handedly in this vast world. Occasionally she’d meet a friendly face but that would only last for a few moments.
Gretel eased herself to lay down on a flatten out piece of cardboard, her almond shaped brown eyes intent upon the mouth of the alleyway as she watched the humans passed by, busy with their daily lives. The black Dachshund rested her head upon her paws as she continued to people watch, her ears drooping as she stared off.
Day after day, she carried on like this. Gretel was a single dog team in these parts. It was scarce for her to meet a dog that was alone like her. Most of the time they seemed bitter and guarded, as it was a dog eat dog world as the saying goes and she was just another cog in the machine.
